7th Green Economy
The 7th Green Economy Conference was held on November 26th 2016 with the partnership of the Heinrich Böll Stiftung and The Green Thought Association, under the title of ‘Climate Finance.’
During the conference speakers shared information on what is climate finance. Climate finance is described as the financial resources mobilized by developed countries for the use of developing countries to be able take mitigation and adaptation measures to combat climate change. Some of the main discussion points from the conference were: to what extent climate finance can be a game changer, how Annex II countries can develop these insufficient resources to adapt to climate change and to decrease emissions, what are the roles of the decision makers on the distribution of climate finance and political proposals on the efficient use of climate finance.
Benito Müller from Oxford University started his speech with an emphasis on the principal of ‘subsidiarity’. He underlined that we need to democratize the decision making process of how will the funds be used, for who they will be used and how much countries need in order to fight climate change. He added that the participation of people in decision-making and auditing processes needs to be ensured.
Liana Schalatek from the Heinrich Böll Washington Office presented information on the Green Climate Fund and why Turkey’s current status prevents it from benefitting from this fund. She mentioned that the fund was promising citing the 55% adaptation finance that provided 1.2 billion dollars to 19 projects in 2016. She also explained that the principals of subsidiarity and gender equality, which GCF embodies, play an important role in promoting a more progressive and democratic political structure in the field of climate change.
Kerem Okumuş from 360S presented the changes and trends in financial sector through green funds, bills and bonds.
On the subject of climate struggle and campaigning, Vesna Jusup, the European Green Party Assistant for Member Party Relations, talked about the divestment campaign of the European Green Party.
6th Green Economy Conference
In 2015 we organized the 6th Green Economy Conference with Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stifting Turkey Representation. Event took place on 19 December 2015 at Cezayir Meeting Hall.
The conference discussed degrowth and transition to a degrowing economic model as an answer to the crisis that humanity is facing due to the inadequacy of the current global economic system. The conference outlined the meaning of degrowth, its start and its expansion and the conference discussed strategies to transition to a post-growing society.
We hope that this conference is a start to political and economical discussions towards degrwoth concept which can be defined as a provocative tool to showcase what is essential and we hope that this conference was a starting point to accept the fact that economic growth business models are not sustainable and are not an answer to powert, inequality, ecological loss and every problem.
